One morning this summer I was eating nutella banana sandwich for breakfast. You know – a slice of bread, a layer of nutella spread and slices of banana on top. I thought: what a pitty that nutella is so full of fat and sugar. If only it was a little bit healthier, so that we can enjoy it more often.
Then I got the idea to mash the banana and mix it with nutella. This way you can enjoy a thick layer of nutella with 50% less fat and significantly less sugar, while you add nutrients and fiber. Since I adore banana-chocolate combination, I also loved the taste of this new spread. Actually, nutella has such am intense flavor that you can’t even taste the banana. You can top the spread with chopped nuts, slices of banana or other fruit, or whatever else you like.
I’m sure that some other fruit could be used instead of mashed banana as well, like avocado, mango or papaya. Or maybe a combination of different fruit. Maybe even some vegetable or legume puree like garbanzo beans (is it too much?). I didn’t try it yet, but ideas just keep popping up in my head.
You can use this healthy(er) alternative in cookies, brownies and many other desserts and snacks. Or you can even put it in your favorite smoothie or shake.
It is a bit embarassing to call this “a recipe” because it is so simple. I would prefer to say it is just an idea for healthifing favorite Italian delight.

- 1 small banana
- 2-3 Tbsp nutella
-
Mash banana with a fork. For very smooth spread, use immersion blender.
-
Add nutella and mix until well blended. Serve as a spread or ice-cream topping or even as a filling for cookies and pastry.
Love this idea! I’ve thinned out PB with a white bean puree but found that I needed to add sugar to get it to taste right (which sort of defeted the purpose, right?) A banana is a much better choice — keeps the sweetness in a healthy natural way. Can’t wait to try this out and get more nutella in my life.
Yes, that is my mission: to get more nutella in our lives! 🙂
