Mixed Berries Compote – easy and quick to make; great with cheesecake, french toast, pancakes, waffles or crepes.
Summer is right time to make Mixed Berries Compote when fresh red or black berries are abundant. If you are reading this in some other time of the year, when there are no fresh berries, you can use frozen ones as well.
Compote making may sound complicated, but is actually very simple and quick to make. Berries are cooked briefly with water or citrus juice, sugar and spices. Then the mixture is thickened with a little bit of cornstarch.
Warm or cold Mixed Berries Compote is equally great served with cheesecake, french toast, pancakes, waffles or crepes.

- 3 c mixed berries, fresh or frozen
- 3 Tbsp fresh lemon/lime/orange juice
- a pinch of lemon/lime/orange zest
- a pinch of cinnamon
- 3-4 Tbsp brown sugar or agave syrup
- 3 tsp cornstarch + 3 Tbsp cold water

In a medium saucepan, cook berries with citrus juice, citrus zest, cinnamon and sugar for about 5 minutes.

Mix cornstarch with water and add to berries. Cook, stirring, for another minute until the mixture thickens.
I make this all the time. for hot cereal topping, cheesecake topping or pancakes /French toast. It’s a no fail recipe and very simple! I always get compliments. I think the little pinch of cinnamon is the special ingredient that sets this compote apart ! Thanks so much for this recipe!!!
