Homemade refried beans are a great side for almost any Mexican main dish. They are also healthier than store bought because they do not contain hydrogenated oils and preservatives.
How do you make refried beans at home? Well, it is pretty easy, actually.

refried pinto beans
Servings: 4 - 6
Ingredients
- 4 cups cooked pinto beans
- 1 Tbsp oil
- 1-2 slices of bacon, cut to small pieces
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 5 cloves minced garlic
- 2 tsp paprika
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp chili powder (or to taste)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- milk or water as needed
Instructions
-
Run cooked beans through a food mill (for very smooth consistency) or mash them with an immersion blender (for chunky beans).
-
In a large frying pan, fry bacon bits until crisp. Take out of the pan.
-
In the same pan, saute the onions until they are soft and translucent. Add garlic, bacon and beans and cook on low heat for about 10 minutes. If the mixture is too dry, add a little bit of milk or water.
This is a satisfying and delicious bean spread!

What a great idea!
Learn the difference between then and than. You sound like an idiot.

I am sorry, English is not my native language and I don’t even live in an English speaking country. I am doing my best not to make mistakes. If you speak any foreign language, you surely know how hard it is.
Leslie – When responding to a recipe, one generally comments with questions or like/dislike of the recipe. Were you just bored and decided to be uptight regarding an extremely common grammatical error? If I were you, I would apologize for wasting comment space – or for being judgmental. As for myself, I wasn’t going to comment, even though I like the idea of bacon in refried beans…yum…but now I am. Because the admin was really gracious, and I feel that her kind response is too good for your unkind comment.
I usually add evaporated milk to my refried beans to make them extra rich because that’s the way I roll! And, as an English and French teacher, I think your command of English is fantastic. Kudos!
