Sweet Potato Flatbread / Roti – the oldest and easiest bread to make; vegan, fat-free, full of fibers.
The other day I’ve seen two videos of making Sweet Potato Flatbread or Roti on YouTube. I liked them both. Since I don’t know who was first to make this recipe, I’m mentioning them both.
I couldn’t wait to try it out. I boiled my sweet potatoes in water. It is better to boil or steam them, as baked sweet potatoes may be a little too dry. Peel the potatoes and mash them. They should still be quite warm because it makes flatbread softer. If you have already cooked sweet potatoes which are cold, you can reheat them prior to making this recipe.
It is so simple and easy to make the flatbread, probably the oldest type of bread in the world. You combine equal parts of mashed sweet potatoes and all-purpose flour. Knead until you get soft dough. Divide the dough into 6 parts. Roll each part into a round shape.
Keep your cooked flatbread in a kitchen napkin for it to stay soft.
This type of flatbread is very mild tasting. If you like, you can add various spices to the mixture.

- 1 cup mashed sweet potato (from 1 large or 2 medium sweet potatoes), warm
- 1 cup all purpose flour

Combine mashed sweet potatoes and all-purpose flour. Knead until you get soft dough. Divide the dough into 6 parts. Roll each part into a round shape.

Heat a pan or a skillet. Place Sweet Potato Flatbread / Roti on the pan. Bake until bubbles form. Turn the roti and bake on the other side. Press with spatula while baking.
Another nice sounding recipe to make for my Vegan daughter.

Nice recipe. I make these and freeze them. It’s easy to know who made the recipe first by looking at the date the videos were published in the description under the video. ?
That is not such a sure way. Some people make a written recipe, but never male a video out of it. While others take their recipe and turn it into a video.
Nonsense! Of course bread made of potatoes are not the first breads made by mankind. The potato is indiginous to the Americas. And the first humans there, where certainly not the first ones to make bread.
Oh, chill out 🙂 It’s obvious that the author was talking about flatbread – non-leavened bread made from the simplest ingredients, easily just flour and water, and baked on a hot surface. This particular recipe happens to contain sweet potatoes, but it’s still flatbread – “probably the oldest type of bread in the world”.

Can you substitute the all purpose flour for another flour? Like almond or coconut?
You probably can, but I haven’t tried it so I can’t say for sure.
