What Is A Hairy Buffalo?
Hairy Buffalo is a punch drink intended for a big crowd. It is made by mixing alcohol, cut fruit and fruit juices. This Jungle juice (AKA hooch, hunch punch, purple Jesus – PJ, or spodi) is made in large quantities and ingredients used may vary a lot.
Hairy Buffalo drink was created during World War II by American soldiers fighting in the Southwest Pacific. The only beverages available to them were water, lemonade and coffee, so they started fermenting their own alcohol from anything they could find.
Similar to Sangria, Hairy Buffalo is great for parties (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, etc) because it is self-serve and can be made ahead of time.
What Ingredients Can I Use?
For this recipe I used: gin, rum, Jose Cuervo tequila , Absolut vodka, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey, slices of fruit, fruit punch and ice cubes.
It is best to use much absorbant fruit like strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, muskmelon, kiwi, cherries, grapes… The more types of fruit juice you use, the better.
You will also need a punch bowl and a large cooler (college kids may even use a new clean trash can, but I wouldn’t go that far).
How Do I Make A Hairy Buffalo Drink?
Making Hairy Buffalo drink is as easy as mixing all beverages together. Then add sliced fruit and ice cubes into the mixture. Transfer into a punch bowl or a large cooler (some people even use a new clean trash can, but I wouldn’t go that far).
The punch can be made a day in advance. In that case mix alcohol, fruit and fruit juices. Add ice cubes right before serving.
How Do I Make a Non Alcoholic Buffalo Hairy?
To make kid-friendly, non-alcoholic version of the drink, combine water or club soda with fruit juice, fruit soda or puréed fruit. Add sliced fresh fruit and some ice cubes.
Serving Harry Buffalo
The most common way of serving is in a large punch bowls, whether made of glass or acrylic. Cocktail picks will also come in handy.
You can either strain the liquid and serve the fruit separately, or ladle the punch together with fruit. Be sure to plan about 1 gallon of juice per 10 people.
Usually Harry Buffalo punch contains 15 to 20 percent alcohol. It is naturally sweet from fruit and fruit juices which conceal its very high alcohol content. It can be dangerous if served to people who are not aware of its strength. It is wise to warn people, especially those who are driving, of the high amount of alcohol in the drink.
