Easy Beer Bread – the simplest quick bread you can make, either white or whole wheat.
Beer bread is one of the easiest quick breads one can make. It is not made with yeast so you just need to mix ingredients together, pop it in the oven and in about 40 minutes you get fresh homemade baked bread.
You can either use all-purpose flour or the mixture of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. It is very important to sift the flour so that bread doesn’t turn out to dense.
If you prefer bread with soft crust, mix whole amount of butter into the dough. For crunchier crust, pour butter over the bread.
Beer bread can be made as often as you like and served with a bowl of hot soup or spread with a knob of butter.

- 2 cups all-purpose flour sifted
- 1 cup whole wheat flour sifted
- 4 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 1 1/2 cup beer room temperature
- 4 Tbsp melted butter or oil
-
Combine sifted all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.
-
Add beer and 3 tablespoons of melted butter. Mix briefly until ingredients come together. Do not overmix.
-
Transfer to oiled and floured loaf pan and drizzle with remaining 1 tablespoon butter.
-
Bake for 45-50 minutes in 375 F (175 C) oven (or 35 minutes in fan oven).
-
Cool to room temperature before cutting.
This looks wonderful! I wonder if this could be adapted to a bread machine? My hubby is not a baker, but does use a bread machine.
It probably can if your bread machine has “quick bread” setting for breads raised with baking powder/baking soda.
